Allison, a “self-proclaimed campaign lawyer from Levelland,” can`t afford to attend one of the three law schools accredited by the American Bar Association in Texas. Instead of going to law school, he earned his law degree by teaching with a local attorney for two years and passing the Texas bar exam in 1934. His struggle to become a lawyer inspired his ambition to establish a law school in West Texas at his alma mater, Texas Technological College. The Texas Tech Board of Directors hired Richard B. Amandes as the first dean of the law school in 1966, and in 1967, the first class of 72 students enrolled in Texas Tech Law. The ABA granted the school`s accreditation in August 1970, followed by accreditation by the Texas Supreme Court in 1968. In 1969, Texas Tech Law became a member of the Association of American Law Schools. Bar throughput rates mirror those of new candidates for the Winter and Summer 2017 exams. The State has the highest number of law school graduates passed the bar examination for the period under review.
