Military personnel and veterans often have legal needs in their personal lives and specific to their military service. They also face financial and other civilian issues arising from the sacrifices made in military life. Depending on the ability, clients are connected to a lawyer in their geographic area who has expertise in their area of need. Your rights if you have a legal problem involving money or debt We need you to help us get beyond the odds. There are more than a million poor people in Georgia who cannot afford a lawyer. A study conducted in Georgia shows that 40% of poor households will have new legal needs every year. Many of these individuals will have civilian needs related to health care, affordable housing or loss of income.
GLSP has only 80 lawyers spread across 154 boroughs to meet the overwhelming demand for legal aid outside the Atlanta metropolitan area, and although they close nearly 16,000 cases each year, they only meet about 20 percent of the legal needs of poor Georgians. And most lawyers — 75%, to be exact — work in the Atlanta metro, where only about 25 percent of the poor live. The Military Legal Assistance Program, jointly sponsored by the Georgia Legal Services Program and the Georgia State Bar, supports military personnel and veterans by connecting them with members of the state bar who are willing to offer free or discounted legal services. Note: Many companies advertise “legal aid” on the Internet. You should always ask questions to make sure you are seeking services from a program that offers free legal aid. You may be eligible for free or low-cost civil legal aid through a legal or pro bono aid program. If you have a legal problem in Georgia, visit www.GeorgiaLegalAid.org for a full directory of civil legal aid programs.
