In short, we were founded in 1956 as the national branch of the National Association for Legal Support Professionals (aka NALS) and have several locals to cater to your needs closer to your location. The first step in 1973 was the creation of special national seminars and workshops for employees of law firms that provided legal assistant services in the workplace. Participation in the new training programs was limited to men and women whose lawyer-employers had signed a certificate attesting that their professional duties were very similar to those of the paralegals mentioned in the American Bar Association`s special committee definition. The programs were planned and presented by the Legal Assistant Section of the Nation Association of Legal Secretaries (“NALS”), which had supported and worked with the ABA Special Committee on Law Assistants since 1968. A working group was established in 1974 to study the feasibility of a national certification examination for paralegals. Five paralegals, two paralegals and two lawyers served on the task force, which became NALA`s first certification committee. After a series of questionnaires on existing national certification systems and paralegal programme managers, it became clear that a separate national professional association for paralegals needed to be established.
NALA provides up-to-date information on the paralegal profession through continuing education, networking opportunities, professional certification programs, professional investigation reports, and other publications to help paralegals excel in the workplace. NALA is a non-profit organization, 501(c)(6), representing more than 12k+ paralegals who are individual members or members of NALA-affiliated associations. NALA is a membership organization. ALA`s award-winning publication reports on topics specific to legal operations – stories that mainstream management and legal publications lack. Jane Terhune and Dorthea Jorde met with Jack Freese, NALS Corporate Counsel, and Maxine Dover, NALS Executive Director, to draft the articles, constitution and bylaws. Most of this design was done during a two-day marathon session in a Chicago hotel room. The gestation period lasted a few years and many lawyers were involved directly or indirectly after the need for a national association for paralegals was first recognized in the early 1970s.
